Nicolas Aubin, Histoire des Diables de Loudun, 1st edition in this format, published in 1716 by Etienne Roger Amsterdam, in French, bound in leather, 378 pages, 16 × 10 cm.
Description from the seller
Cruel effects of the Vengeance of Cardinal Richelieu or The History of the Devils of Loudun and of the Possession of the Ursuline Nuns by Urbain Grandier Amsterdam 1716.
The possession of the Loudun Ursuline convent is the second case of demonic possession recorded in a religious community. The violence of these manifestations caused astonishment and morbid curiosity among the ruling class: this time, the devil directly assaulted the nobility’s daughters and the religious institution. Political stakes then intertwined with this, pitting the central authority against the independence claims of certain towns. This explosive mix led to the destruction of the city’s fortifications, and to the torture and burning at the stake of Urbain Grandier. The notoriety of the Loudun Ursulines possession had unforeseen consequences; the Inquisition’s power indeed struck at the heart of the nobility, by attacking both the power and the religious institution, thereby condemning itself.
Sells a very beautiful volume bound in full vellum (calf), with an ornate spine and title piece, 378 pages and one engraving. In very good condition. A work from the Louis XIV era.
