Three-volume set of Tito Livio's Opera quae supersunt, in Latin, bound in parchment, about 1200 pages, dated 1759 in Padova and 1791 in Bassano, with Crevier's notes and annotations; condition Very Good.
Description from the seller
Tito Livio – Opera quae supersunt – 3 octavo volumes from the eighteenth century – Padua 1759 / Bassano 1791
Lot consisting of three antique volumes of the surviving works of the Roman historian Titus Livius (Titus Livius Patavinus), with Latin text and extensive philological and historical annotations.
Composition of the lot:
Volume III, T. Livii Opera quae supersunt, with interpretations and annotations by J.-B.-L. Crevier. Padua (Patavii), 1759.
Volume IV, of the same Padua edition of 1759, with comments and notes by Crevier. The text ends on page 402 with the wording Finis quarti tomi.
Volume IV, T. Livii Opera quae supersunt, Bassano (Bassani) edition, 1791, with Crevier’s critical apparatus, references to Arnold Drakenborch, and contributions by Vito M. Giovenazzi.
The works include portions of the monumental history of Rome Ab Urbe condita, with Latin text, divisions into books and chapters, explanatory notes, and references to events in Roman history.
Conditions: old bindings in light material, with traces of dirt, abrasions, stains and wear to the corners, edges and spines. One binding shows material loss on the lower part of the back. Internally there are signs of yellowing, foxing, halos and age stains. Present typographic ornaments and ornate initials; on one title page there is a handwritten ownership note.
Important: the lot consists of volumes from two different editions and includes two Volume IVs. Therefore it does not constitute a complete editorial series.
The photographs are an integral part of the description of the condition.
An interesting testimony of eighteenth-century classical publishing, suitable for antique-book collectors, classical studies, and Roman history.
