United Kingdom - Military medal - British shooting medal from the Portsmouth Port Rifle & Revolver 1895–1915

The Portsmouth Port Rifle & Revolver was a prestigious shooting competition organized by and for the British armed forces, aimed especially at personnel of the Royal Navy and the Royal Marines. Portsmouth has historically been one of the United Kingdom's principal naval bases.

Historical Context of the Medal

Around the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century (primarily driven by the Boer Wars and the lead-up to the First World War), the British Army emphasized a drastic improvement in shooting skill among military personnel.
The medal is bronze and depicts crossed rifles on a wreath. This type of medal was not awarded as a standard issue, but had to be earned specifically by achieving high rankings in certain standings.
