Description from the seller
Precious 1924 academic volume bringing together two first-rate scientific memoirs:
1. Pierre Fatou: “On analytic iteration and permutable substitutions” (starting on page 1). A foundational historical text for the study of complex dynamical systems, which will lay the theoretical foundations of holomorphic dynamics and fractals (Julia and Fatou sets).
2. Paul Dienes: “On the mathematical structure of tensor calculus” (starting on page 79). A major contribution of its time to the mathematical formalization of general relativity.
provenance: provenance: An original scholarly collection bearing the distinctive marks of the working fonds of the mathematician Jean Leray (handwritten signatures in pencil and dedications from peers attributed). Some volumes also bear stamps or ex-libris from UCL (Université Catholique de Louvain), testimony to the academic and institutional exchanges of the era. Lot sold as is, the signatures and historic provenance being offered as “attributed” based on the visible material elements.
