Three volumes of Nihon Shiryaku by Tanaka Yoshikado from the Meiji period (1877), published by Naitō Shoya, with Volumes 1, 2 and 4 included (Volume 3 missing), bound in traditional watoji, in Japanese and with 40 pages each measuring 22 by 15 cm, overall condition Fair.
Description from the seller
A set of three antique Japanese books titled “Nihon Shiryaku” (日本史略), edited by Tanaka Yoshikado (田中義廉) and dating from the Meiji period.
“Nihon Shiryaku” is a historical work covering the history of Japan from ancient times onward. The books are printed in traditional vertical Japanese text and bound in the traditional watoji (Japanese thread-bound) style.
This lot contains Volumes 1, 2 and 4. Volume 3 is missing, so this is not a complete set.
The books show considerable signs of age and use, including stains, discoloration, foxing, worn and damaged covers, creases, tears, edge wear and deterioration of the paper. The bindings also show wear and looseness in places. Handwritten inscriptions and ownership stamps/marks can be seen on some pages.
Despite their condition, these books retain considerable historical character and are interesting examples of early Meiji-period Japanese historical publications.
Please carefully examine all photographs for the exact condition and contents.
