Description from the seller
Authentic and rare vintage Japanese statuette depicting a Daruma, the famous votive figure of perseverance and Zen Buddhism.
This collectible piece was entirely handmade by master sculptor Kokuei, whose handwritten signature is engraved on the back of the object.
It is a typical work of traditional craftsmanship from the Hida-Takayama region, executed according to the centuries-old Ichii Ittobori technique. This method involves carving yew wood with clear, exposed gouges, allowing the raw material to express itself without any paint in order to enhance the natural grain and the nuances of the wood.
The face of the Daruma exudes a captivating expression, both stern and protective, with a striking gaze highlighted by the precision of the carving.
Dating from the mid-20th century (Showa period), this Japanese folk art object is in excellent vintage condition.
Its natural patina is magnificent and the wood shows no cracks.
Dimensions:
H 13 x D 11 cm
In Japanese tradition, the Daruma is a very powerful talisman embodying perseverance, success and home protection (“Fall seven times, stand up eight”).
