Joseph-Jérôme le Français de Lalande's Connoissance des temps pour l'année 1761, a French astronomy and science book bound in demi leather with four folding plates, 240 pages, originally published in 1759 by De l'Imprimerie Royale in Paris in one volume (edition Autre édition).
Description from the seller
Joseph-Jérôme le Français de Lalande, Connoissance des temps for the year 1761 at the Paris meridian, published by order of the Royal Academy of Sciences, and calculated by M. De Lalande, of the same Academy, at Paris, from the Imprimerie Royake, 1759, 1 volume, 240 pp. Four fold-out plates.
In-12°, half-leatherBinding, smooth spine, adorned with gilded borders and title, punched in relief. All edges marbled. Bookplate preserved.
Spine worn and soiled with losses and epidermations. Gilding and motifs faded. Rubs and epidermations on the boards. Upper and lower edges scantily preserved. Corners worn.
Interior fresh despite a few marks and light stains, as well as a slight browning of the paper.
Complete work with these four fold-out plates at the end of the volume, including a map of France by Philippe Buache (1700-1773), royal geographer and member of the Royal Academy of Sciences, who was a key figure in 18th-century French cartography.
The historical interest of the work is undeniable. This annual scientific publication gathered astronomical data useful for determining the position of the stars, calculating the ephemerides, and contributing to navigation work.
This 1759 edition has particular interest: it belongs to the early volumes developed under the direction of Jérôme de Lalande, who took charge of this publication that year. Questions of determining longitudes at sea occupied an important place in his work.
The two plates devoted to longitude calculations and the one representing the Moon are thus consistent with the scientific vocation of the work.
Its interest is therefore historical and scientific. It may appeal to enthusiasts of ancient astronomy, collectors of 18th-century scientific books, and bibliophiles interested in the history of navigation.
