Description from the seller

Title: Sorrowful Virgin

School: Italian Baroque (18th Century)

Style: Devotional Baroque

Technique: Oil on canvas

Magnificent representation of a Sorrowful Virgin belonging to the Italian Baroque school of the eighteenth century, conceived as an image of deep devotion and intense spirituality. The composition presents the Virgin in bust, with gaze lifted to the sky and the face illuminated by an expression of serenity, resignation, and recollection, evoking suffering accepted with faith. Her hand rests on the chest while she delicately holds the veil, a gesture laden with symbolism that reinforces the meditative character of the scene.

The work stands out for the refined treatment of chiaroscuro, characteristic of the Italian Baroque, which models the face and hands through warm lighting on a dark background, concentrating all attention on the figure’s expression. The folds of the white veil, the reddish tunic, and the blue cloak are executed with delicacy, contributing chromatic richness and visual depth. The brushwork is careful, and the modeling of the flesh conveys softness and naturalism.

The painting shows restorations, typical of a work of this chronology, compatible with its age and conservation.

The piece is presented in a black lacquered wooden frame with a sober and elegant gold inner moulding, a combination that enhances the piece’s chromatic intensity and harmonizes with the painting’s classical character.

Observations:

The work may incur damage during transport even with proper packaging. In such case, we will need photographs of the damage in order to proceed with compensation. Customer satisfaction is always our priority.

Exceptionally, shipping costs may be affected by surcharges for reasons such as being outside a continental territory, excess dimensions, or weight of the item. PremiArt will not cover this surcharge under any circumstances.

Due to issues at the border with Switzerland we must inform that shipments taller than 1 meter in length or height to that destination will not be made.

Because of the high volume of shipments, it is possible that the order is delayed for more than three days, and we apologize and thank you for your patience. If you have any questions about your order, please contact us through the internal messaging system.
