Description from the seller

Title: Christ and the Samaritan Woman

School: Italian Baroque (17th–18th centuries)

Style: Baroque

Technique: Oil on canvas

Magnificent religious-themed composition inspired by the Gospel passage of Christ’s encounter with the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well. The scene places both figures in the foreground, where Christ is shown seated on some rocks while conversing with the woman, who stands beside the well’s rim holding a vessel. Her serene and expressive gestures reinforce the spiritual and narrative character of the episode.

The landscape takes on great prominence, developed as an expansive idealized view in the classical tradition. A lush grove frames the scene on the left, while in the background unfolds a wide horizon with blue-tinged mountains, ancient-looking buildings, a multi-arched bridge, and a river that adds depth to the composition. The light, treated with delicate atmospheric transitions, envelops the landscape and creates a refined aerial perspective effect, a hallmark of Italian Baroque painting influenced by classical landscape painting.

The brushwork is careful and balanced, with a palette of earthy tones, greens, and blues that contribute to a contemplative atmosphere. The work shows restorations, in keeping with its age.

The piece is presented in a carved and gilded wooden frame, of classical style, richly ornamented with vegetal motifs and rocaille at the corners and centers. The gilding shows wear, small losses, and patina proper to the passage of time, aspects that enhance its historical and decorative character.

Observations:

- It shows restorations.

The work may incur damage during transport even with proper packaging. In that case, we will need photographs of the damage to proceed with compensation. Customer satisfaction is always our priority.

Exceptionally, shipping costs may be affected by a surcharge due to reasons such as being outside a continental territory, excessive dimensions or weight of the item. PremiArt will never be responsible for this surcharge.

Due to border issues with Switzerland we must inform you that shipments longer than 1 meter in length or height to that destination will not be carried out.

Because of the high volume of shipments, orders may be delayed by more than three days; we apologize and thank you for your patience. If you have any questions about your order, please contact us via internal messaging.
