Description from the seller

Title: Penitent Jesus Christ

School: Italian (XVII)

Style: Baroque

Technique: Oil on canvas (re-lined)

Magnificent composition with a religious theme belonging to the Italian school of the seventeenth century, executed within the aesthetic language of the Baroque. The work represents Jesus Christ in a penitential attitude, seated with an exposed torso, covered only by a white loincloth. His head is surrounded by a luminous halo that emphasizes his divine nature, while he directs a downward, serene gaze that conveys contemplation, resignation, and deep spirituality.

The anatomy is treated with great naturalism, highlighting the body’s modeling through a refined use of chiaroscuro. On the skin one can notice small bleeding wounds alluding to the Passion of Christ, reinforcing the devotional character of the scene. The tenebrist lighting focuses attention on the main figure, which emerges powerfully from a dark background, a characteristic device of Italian Baroque painting.

The composition presents a sober chromatic palette dominated by blacks, ochres, earth tones, and whites, achieving a marked contrast between illuminated areas and shadows. The brushwork is careful and precise, contributing to the sense of volume and depth. This is a work conceived for religious contemplation and meditation, following the Counter-Reformation tradition of seventeenth-century Italian painting.

The work has been relined and, being an older painting, shows restorations, routine interventions aimed at ensuring its proper conservation over time.

Observations:

The work may sustain damage during transport even with proper packaging. In such case, we will require photographs of the damages to proceed with compensation. Customer satisfaction is always our priority.

Exceptional circumstances may cause shipping costs to be affected by a surcharge due to reasons such as being outside a continental territory, excessive dimensions or weight of the item. PremiArt will in no case cover this surcharge.

Due to problems at the Switzerland border we are obliged to inform you that shipments with a length or height exceeding 1 meter to that destination will not be carried out.
