Description from the seller

Title: Port Capriccio

School: Italian, Circle of Canaletto (18th century)

Style: Italian Baroque vedutismo

Technique: Oil on canvas

Magnificent port scene inspired by the Venetian tradition of the Circle of Canaletto, where architectural precision blends with an elaborated maritime landscape of idealized character. The composition presents a capriccio, a pictorial genre that mixes real and imaginary buildings to create a view of great scenic appeal.

In the foreground, intense everyday activity unfolds along the quay. Several sailing vessels remain moored while sailors and fishermen handle nets and prepare the day’s work. Various figures animate the scene, adding dynamism and scale to the composition. On the left rise monumental stone constructions framing the perspective, while in the background an elegant building with a large dome stands out, evoking the monumental architecture of Baroque Venice. The horizon opens onto a tranquil sheet of water dotted with boats, guiding the eye to the distance, under a wide sky of light-filled clouds that adds depth and visual balance.

The work reflects the distinctive characteristics of Italian 18th-century vedutismo: careful treatment of perspective, refined study of light, architectural detail, and a serene atmosphere that turns the urban landscape into the true protagonist. The precise brushwork and chromatic harmony, dominated by blues, ochres, and warm earth tones, confer great elegance to the whole.

The work is presented in a blackened wood frame with stepped moldings and decorative classical-inspired fillets. It bears a patina consistent with its age, along with small losses and surface wear at various points, compatible with the passage of time.

Observations:

It has undergone restorations.

The work may incur damage during transport even with proper packaging. In such a case, we will require photographs of the damages to proceed with compensation. Customer satisfaction is always our priority.

Exceptional shipping costs may be affected by a surcharge due to factors such as being outside a continental territory, excessive dimensions, or weight of the item. PremiArt will not be responsible for this surcharge under any circumstances.
