Description from the seller
Antique Putter "The new Mills Ray model"
This very collectable putter is the Braid Mills upright Lie aluminium putter made by the The Standard Golf Company Sunderland.
It has registration nr's and a U.S. patent nr. stamped on top
The attraction of aluminium was the feel of contact with the ball when compared to that of steel and the whole range of clubs were made in moulds in a style similar to older long-nosed cleeks. The weight and lie of the the clubs is usually stamped on the sole. In this case 9 ozs. 13 drs.
length 82 cm
Sir William Mills (24 April 1856 – 7 January 1932) was an English engineer.
He produced some of Britain's earliest aluminium golf clubs: Patent, No 13545. known as Metallic Golfing Instrument Heads. He was a keen golfer and had joined the Wearside Golf Club in around 1892. The English company became more well known as Standard Mills because of Sir William Mills and his production of Mills bombs (hand grenades) in World War I.
It has a hickory shaft and leather grip. The shaft is mounted in a drilled hole in the clubhead, the wood that came out on the bottom of the club was then sawn off. The hosel, the place where the wooden shaft enters the clubhead is in fine condition. no cracks in the aluminium.
This is a great addition to any collection! and a great conversation piece.
Very decorative!
Will be carefully packed and shipped.
We use recycled materials as packaging to reduce waste.
