Description from the seller

Title: Cloudy Day

School: Catalan School, 20th Century

Author: Josep Miquel Serrano (Barcelona, 1912-Sitges, 1982)

Style: Post-Impressionist landscape painting with expressionist nuances

Technique: Oil on canvas

Date: 1932

Circle and influences: Linked to the environment of Catalan landscape painting in the first third of the 20th century. The spontaneous brushwork, chromatic reduction and atmospheric treatment reveal post-impressionist influences, with certain echoes of expressionism in the interpretation of the sky and the coastal landscape.

Marina of intimate character depicting a small bay sheltered by an elevating mountain range. Several boats appear anchored on tranquil waters, while the figures and port structures are barely hinted at through rapid and synthetic brushstrokes.

The sky, covered by large masses of gray clouds, dominates a large part of the composition and creates a humid and melancholic atmosphere. The palette focuses on gray, ocher, black and earthy tones, animated by discreet reddish accents in the hulls of the small boats. The loose, gestural brushwork gives the scene a notable sense of immediacy.

The work appears signed and dated “32” in the lower left corner.

About the author: Josep Miquel Serrano (Barcelona, 1912-Sitges, 1982) was a Catalan artist of the 20th century whose production is connected with the Mediterranean landscape tradition. In this work he shows special interest in capturing atmospheric phenomena and in a sober and emotional interpretation of the coastal landscape.

It presents a molded frame with stepped profiles and an aged silver finish. Its sober design complements the painting’s color range. It may show signs of use and wear typical of its age.

Observations: Color perception may vary slightly depending on lighting and screen settings. It is recommended to carefully examine the photographs, which are an integral part of the description.

Exceptionally, shipping costs may be affected by a surcharge due to causes such as being outside a continental territory, excess dimensions or weight of the item. PremiArt will not be responsible for this surcharge.

Due to problems at the border with Switzerland we are obliged to inform that shipments over 1 meter in length or height to that destination will not be carried out.

The artwork may incur damage during transport even if properly packed. In such a case, we will require photographs of the defects to proceed with compensation. Customer satisfaction is always our priority.
