Description from the seller

Title: Floral Bouquet

School: Española

Author: Segundo Matilla

Style: Realism / Floral still life

Technique: Oil on canvas

Author:
Segundo Matilla (1862–1937) was a Spanish painter associated with fin-de-siècle realism and the naturalist currents of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He stood out especially for his still lifes and interior scenes, in which he showed remarkable chromatic sensitivity and careful handling of light and textures. His work reflects a solid academic training and a clear influence of the Spanish pictorial tradition, with particular attention to drawing and balanced composition.

The composition presents a delicate floral bouquet arranged in a dark vase, placed on a horizontal surface that divides the pictorial space. The arrangement combines flowers in pink, white and yellow tones, treated with a loose yet controlled brushstroke that brings freshness and naturalness to the whole. The background, solved in dark and sober hues, enhances the chromatic liveliness of the flowers and centers the viewer’s attention on the main subject. The work stands out for its compositional balance, the contrast between light and shadow, and the careful representation of the floral textures, characteristics typical of the realist still life transitioning between centuries.

On the back of the canvas remains a label from Barrachina y Ramoneda, a detail of documentary and commercial interest.

The work is presented with a carved and gilded wooden frame, with a wide profile and rich classical ornamentation. The frame shows fluted moldings and decorative motifs of traditional inspiration, in keeping with the period and the character of the painting, markedly enhancing the visual presence of the set.

The frame is included as a gift. It may show damage during transport even with proper packaging.
