Description from the seller
Title: Portrait of a Lady
School: European, 18th century
Style: Academic portrait of Baroque influence
Technique: Oil on canvas
Magnificent female portrait of European school produced during the 19th century, executed in oil on canvas with notable sensitivity in the treatment of light and flesh tones. The work depicts a lady of distinguished bearing, shown half-length and slightly turned toward the viewer, with a serene and elegant expression that conveys refinement and nobility.
The composition stands out for the softness of the luminous transitions and for the delicacy in the rendering of the face and hands. The figure wears aristocratic-inspired attire, with wide sleeves and flowing fabrics treated with fluid and nuanced brushstrokes. The dark, neutral background emphasizes the sitter’s presence and recalls the compositional formulas inherited from European Baroque portraiture.
The color palette, dominated by earth tones, ochres and burgundies, lends depth and sobriety to the scene. The work presents an intimate and elegant atmosphere, typical of 19th-century salon portraits inspired by classical models earlier. It shows restorations.
The piece is mounted in a carved and gilded wooden frame, decorated with classical and Rococo-style ornamental elements. Its vegetal motifs and shells in the corners and centers stand out, adding presence and visual richness to the whole. The gilding shows patina and wear in keeping with the piece’s age.
Notes:
The work may incur damage during transport even with proper packaging. In that case, we will need photographs of the damages to proceed with compensation. Customer satisfaction is always our priority.
