Description from the seller
Title: Popular Festival – Costumbrista Style
School: Catalan (19th century)
Style: Costumbrismo
Technique: Oil on canvas
The present composition represents a lively outdoor scene of a popular festival, characteristic of the urban Catalan milieu of the 19th century. In the foreground there is a group of figures, among which a woman accompanied by a girl dressed in light tones descends a few steps, bringing closeness and narrative to the scene.
In the middle ground a gathered crowd unfolds, possibly around a celebration or community event, with flags and ephemeral structures such as booths or stalls. The loose and vibrant brushwork captures the dynamism of the whole, while the chromatic range, dominated by greens, ochers and warm tones, reinforces the festive atmosphere.
The architectural background is dominated by a tall church tower, an element that structures the composition and adds depth. The vegetation, treated with impressionistic ease, frames the scene creating a play of light and shadow that suggests natural, softened lighting.
The work is classified within costumbrismo, reflecting daily life and popular traditions, with particular attention to social interaction and the communal environment.
The ensemble is framed in a carved wooden frame with a perimeter decor of repetitive classical motifs, possibly inspired by vegetal patterns. It has a dark-toned finish with gold details that highlight the reliefs, lending elegance and visual depth to the whole. The frame presents an aesthetic in line with the work, reinforcing its traditional character.
Observations:
Restorations present.
Exceptionally, shipping costs may be affected by a surcharge due to reasons such as being outside a continental territory, excess measurements or weight of the item. PremiArt will not cover this surcharge under any circumstances.
Due to issues at the Switzerland border, we are obliged to inform that shipments with a length or height over 1 meter to that destination will not be carried out.
The work may incur damage during transport even with proper packaging. In such a case, we will need photographs of the damages to proceed with compensation. Customer satisfaction is always our priority.
Dimensions: 62 x 47 cm (work) / 72 x 76 cm (with frame)
