Description from the seller

Naples History divided into three volumes. - Typesetting by Michaël Aloysius Mutio, 1713

Erudite Year into four parts, or The States of Time distributed (Part I: Ver Herculanum; Part II: Aestates Surrentina). At Dominque Raillard, 1722

4 total volumes (complete historical work in 3 volumes + 1 related volume by the same author)

Extraordinary and important set of four volumes printed in Naples at the beginning of the 18th century, comprising the monumental historical work and the famous poetical-scientific composition by Niccolò Partenio Giannettasio, eminent scholar and Neapolitan Jesuit.

Historia Neapolitana (1713) – 3 Volumes:
The work represents one of the most ambitious endeavors of the early 18th century to narrate the history of the Kingdom of Naples from its origins up to the viceregal era. Dedicated to Prince Carlo Pacecco Carafa, Duke of Maddaloni, the discussion ranges from Greek and Roman foundation to the medieval, Angevin, Aragonese and Spanish vicissitudes. The text is enriched by wood-engraved title devices depicting the Jesuit monogram IHS with floral decorations, decorated initials, and final pieces engraved. In 8°, pp. 476, 534, 566 n.

Annus Eruditus / Stata Tempora (1722) – 1 Volume:
A poetical set of considerable literary and antiquarian value. The first part, Ver Herculanum, offers a poetic and scholarly description of the roughness and beauties of the volcanic Vesuvian and Herculanean territory, written with notable advance prior to the official archaeological rediscovery of Herculaneum. The second part, Aestates Surrentina, is devoted to the Sorrentine peninsula, with the ecclesiastical approbations dated 1696 and reprinted in 1715 and 1722. In 8° gr., pp. 185 n. (Veris Erculani) - 198 n. (Aestatum Surrentinarum)

Bindings in half-leather with cornerpieces in excellent conservation state. Spines perfectly firm, with intact joints, caps well preserved and gilding particularly lively and bright. Very slight and imperceptible signs of shelving on the boards and at the margins of the pastedowns, altogether negligible.

In the first volume of Historia Neapolitana, at the title page and the first pages, there are mild and ancient halos of humidity and marginal foxing that do not affect legibility. Existence of old paper restorations at the inner/lower margin of the title page of Volume I. Some leaves show physiological browning and slight reddening due to the paper type of the era. Wide margins, sturdy and crisp leaves, absence of termites or significant textual losses. Overall, a very pleasing, solid and fresh copy, perfectly usable.

Niccolò Partenio Giannettasio (Naples, 1648 – Massa Lubrense, 1715) was a renowned mathematician, poet and historian belonging to the Society of Jesus. A professor at the Collegio Massimo of Naples, he was a prominent figure of the Neapolitan cultural milieu on the cusp of the 17th and 18th centuries, famous for his refined Latin elegiac and epic production.
