Oil on canvas landscape titled La campagne française, from 19th‑century French painting in the Impressionist style, attributed to the Circle of Joseph Lailhaca and sold with the frame.
Description from the seller
Interesting oil on canvas in the French school style, created in the artistic milieu of Joseph Lailhaca (Bordeaux, 1876–1920), depicting a rural landscape with figures, vegetation, and distant buildings.
The work appears signed in the lower left corner and also bears on the back an attribution to Joseph Lailhaca. However, lacking documentation, certificate, or expert study to conclusively confirm authorship, it is prudently offered at auction as the Circle of Joseph Lailhaca (1876–1920).
Joseph Lailhaca was a French painter linked to Bordeaux, active from the late 19th century to the early decades of the 20th. He trained with the landscape painter Henry Grosjean, regularly participated in the exhibitions of the Société des Amis des Arts de Bordeaux between 1905 and 1920, and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français between 1907 and 1914. His known output includes numerous landscapes and scenes with figures, with works preserved in collections tied to the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux.
The composition shows an intimate, rural landscape, built with loose, richly tactile brushwork. In the foreground, a path unfolds among areas of vegetation and cultivation, animated by small female figures that introduce scale and life to the scene. In the distance, a slender vertical structure rises among the trees and helps reinforce the depth of perspective.
The painting’s treatment of the vegetation and the ground stands out, executed with short, impastoed, spontaneous brushstrokes, as well as a palette dominated by greens, earth tones, ochres, and grayish hues. The slightly veiled atmosphere and the freedom of execution relate the work to the French landscape currents developed at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th.
The landscape theme is also coherent with the known output of Lailhaca, for whom various landscape compositions and pastoral scenes from the early 20th century are documented.
Oil on canvas. Signed. Attribution to Joseph Lailhaca on the back. Catalogued and sold as the Circle of Joseph Lailhaca, without guaranteeing the artist’s direct authorship.
The work is presented in a frame. The frame is included as a courtesy to the buyer and is not considered an integral part of the work, so any possible defect in it will not be grounds for complaint.
The condition is as can be seen in the photos, which form an integral part of the description. It shows signs of age and use consistent with its period. It is recommended to carefully examine all images to assess the overall condition of the work and the frame, as well as possible craquelure, wear, small faults, scratches, restorations, or interventions.
Packaging will be prepared professionally and carefully to ensure maximum possible protection during transport.
Shipments to destinations outside the European Union may be subject to duties, taxes, import fees, and customs procedures, whose costs will be the sole responsibility of the buyer. Customs procedures may cause delays relative to usual delivery times.
