Description from the seller
DESCRIPTION
"Scorcio di Citta' con Portico", oil on canvas, 95x114 cm with frame, 85x105 cm the canvas alone, signed Giuseppe Toisischi on the back and dated 1847.
The painting offers a suggestive glimpse into daily life of the era, captured through the broad and shady filter of an imposing porticoed structure. Beneath the beamed wooden ceiling, the scene fills with minute yet vibrant human figures: in the foreground to the right a group of people sits chatting, while in the center two women in traditional dresses advance, one of whom carries a basket on her head, and in the background a cart drawn by animals with a driver and other passersby can be glimpsed. The large stone arches on the left and the expansive central vault act as proscenium frames and visual windows, revealing a lively urban architecture in the rear, characterized by palaces with loggias, pitched roofs and dormer windows, standing out against a sky with natural tones and dense cloudiness.
From a compositional viewpoint, the artist adopts a strict geometric perspective, heightened by the contrast between the dimness of the foreground portico and the intense brightness of the natural light that bathes the square and the façades of the buildings. The brushwork, dense and impasto but attentive to detail, effectively conveys the texture of stone, wood and pavement, visible especially in the warm floorings heated by the sun. The color play hinges on a chiaroscuro contrast skillfully orchestrated: the dark, earthy, shadowy tones of the interior oppose the warm hues of ochre, yellow and red of the sunlit buildings, interspersed with touches of color from the villagers’ attire and the blue-green of the sky and the vegetation visible beyond the structures.
The work fully belongs to the rich output of genre painting and veduta (view) painting of the Italian school of the mid-19th century, a period when interest in urban landscape and everyday life detached itself from rigid neoclassical idealizations to embrace a more intimate sensibility, of Romantic and pre-naturalist imprint. In this light, the canvas is not only a celebration of perspective and historical architecture, but becomes a bearer of a poetry attentive to the truth of popular experience, where monumental space and human dimension blend harmoniously. The year of execution, 1847, places the scene on the eve of the great Risorgimento ferment, returning the suspended and vibrant atmosphere of a provincial Italy captured in its industrious and truthful everyday life.
