Description from the seller
Very beautiful tobacco jar. The jar is made of ceramic and dates from the 1950s or 1960s. It comes from Germany and was made by the Marzi & Remy factory, which was located in Höhr-Grenzhausen, Westerwald, and produced from 1879 to 1994. The jar weighs 1 kg, is 25 cm high, and has a diameter of 11.5 cm.
The jar features a beautiful cobalt-blue color with small specks of brown, green, red and black, and is glossy glazed. It is especially striking for the image of Susanna on the lid.
Susanna is a biblical figure from the story 'Susanna and the Elders,' a story that in art has often served as inspiration for paintings but also sculptures. Marzi & Remy created a Susanna series for their tobacco jars. They used images from old molds for this. The initials E P E K on the side of the jar historically stand for the names Engle Pesch and Engle Kran. These were two of the most influential 16th-century master potters (and stamp engravers) from the famous ceramic center Raeren (a place in the current German-speaking part of Belgium).
They worked closely together at the time and designed in 1584 the original Renaissance molds for these specific Susanna reliefs. Marzi & Remy simply incorporated these letters into their design to make the jars as authentic as possible.
The tobacco jar is still in excellent condition. Only irregularities that occurred during the firing process are visible, but that’s part of the jar. For example, there is a spot where glaze seems absent and a few tiny dots on the rim are visible (see photos). The jar has no damage and is in almost new condition.
This tobacco jar is a jewel in any interior. Of course, it can still be used as a tobacco jar, but you can also store other items in it. Very interesting for collectors, but also for others who love beautiful things with a history.
This tobacco jar will be carefully packed and insured for shipping."} } } { } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } }}} (Note: The above trailing braces are accidental; ensure final JSON contains only the one key.) }} } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } } }
