The sitters include major artists and cultural figures of the École de Paris, among them Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Henri Matisse and Alexandre Archipenko.

With 41 portraits mounted on plates. Paper covers. Some darkening and staining. The spine has nicking and chipping to the paper. Binding is quite weak, and the first gather falls open on the tipped in illustration of Jean Pellerin. There is chipping and splitting to the spine. It is in need of repair.
Overall, the work is in very nice condition internally. Some pages uncut.
206 pages. 29 x 19.5 cm.
Chana Orloff emigrated with her Jewish family from the Ukraine to the British Mandate of Palestine in 1904 after pogroms. After six years, she moved to Paris, as a figurative sculptor associated with the École de Paris. She became part of the city’s modernist milieu and built a reputation especially as a portrait sculptor; her wider sculptural œuvre includes nearly 500 works.
She was often called the “portraitiste de Montparnasse.” Her sitters included figures such as architect Auguste Perret and writer Anaïs Nin, alongside many leading artists of the period.
Orloff knew her sitters personally: Braque, Cocteau, Derain, Léger, Picasso and others. Contemporary accounts describe it as a collection of 41 drawn portraits of famous figures of the art world (Braque, Picasso, Matisse).
It shows the École de Paris through the eyes of a woman sculptor
A nice detail: Gaston Picard, one of the authors, was also her sitter. In her sculpted portrait he wears a modern suit that’s a little too tight
Orloff was Jewish from Ukraine. During the war she narrowly escaped deportation and escaped to Switzerland.
PLEASE NOTE - WE ARE AWAY AT A BOOKFAIR FROM THE 28TH OCTOBER UNTIL THE 11TH NOVEMBER - SO WE PROBABLY CANNOT SHIP UNTIL OUR RETURN. THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE.
