Gérard Gully was a French bibliophile known in the circle of collectors of rare books and original editions. His books are recognizable by his personalized ex-libris depicting him as Don Quixote, accompanied by the parodic motto in Alsatian/slang: "samen aqua touça".
Besides his interest in major 20th‑century authors (such as Henry de Montherlant), he was a great admirer and passionate collector of Panait Istrati's work.
Henri-Dominique Furois is a renowned French bindery artist noted for his original creations, contemporary structures and the care given to precious editions and major texts of the 20th century.
A rare and precious pairing bringing together two original editions of Panait Istrati published by Rieder in 1933 in very low edition numbers. The set has been luxuriously encased in a half-leather binding with corners and a personalized tail stamp, testifying to the care bestowed by a bibliophile on this collection. A top-choice piece for a discerning collector.
