AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Madonna Lactans (Madonna of the Milk) with Blessing Infant Jesus Holding the Globus Cruciger. Period: 17th – 18th Century.
Oil on canvas, folk art / devotional style (Southern Italian / Colonial School)
A rare and fascinating devotional depiction of the Madonna Lactans (Madonna of the Milk).
The Virgin, crowned and wrapped in a rich cloak decorated with floral patterns and stars, is portrayed breastfeeding the Child Jesus.
The Infant Jesus, also crowned, holds the globus cruciger (symbol of sovereignty over the world) in His left hand and performs a gesture of blessing with His right hand.
The composition is distinguished by strong features of period devotional art, characterized by an archaic iconography of great visual and spiritual impact. The work recently underwent a conservative and structural restoration intervention. The original canvas, ancient and worn along the edges, was stabilized by lining it onto a new canvas support and mounting it on a modern wooden stretcher with corner reinforcements. It was cleaned and integrated in the paint losses to restore full legibility to the image.
Note for collectors: Photographic documentation of the artwork prior to restoration is available (see the last photo of the listing), attesting to the authenticity and antiquity of the original material (period craquelure, historical wear, and edges with ancient mounting holes).
