This blue porcelain cachepot from Thüringen, Germany, dating to 1800–1850, has hand-painted floral panels, gold detailing and lion-head handles, measures 20 × 31 × 21.5 cm and is in excellent condition with minimal signs of age and wear.
Description from the seller
Upon request comes a regal, imposing Prunk-Übertopf (cachepot) from Thuringia, crafted in the second half of the 19th century (Historism / Gründerzeit, approx. 1860–1890). The splendid vessel captivates with its bright blue ground color (in the style of the classic Bleu de Sèvres) and its stately, bulbous form with a maximum diameter of 31 cm.
• Decoration & painting: On the two large front sides there are opulent, white-ground reserve cartouches with wavy gold tracery. The cartouches display two different, masterfully executed floral arrangements (a magnificent bouquet of asters and dahlias as well as a bouquet with anemones, poppy, and forget-me-nots). This is demonstrably fine, polychrome hand painting. The brushwork and the enamel relief are clearly visible under magnification; there is no transfer decoration.
• Three-dimensional decoration: On the sides there are two fully three-dimensionally formed, regal lion heads (lion mascarons) as handles, whose manes and contours are exquisitely accented with gold. The upper rim is also adorned with a fine gold band.
• Base mark: On the unglazed underside sits the sharply impressed blind stamp "17 TR 1". The letter combination stands for the renowned Thuringian manufactory Schönau, Swaine & Co. (Hüttensteinach); the numerals indicate the model and serial size.
