Great, big book about Paris from an unusual perspective.
"Horst Hamann was born in Mannheim in 1958. Hamann grew up without a father and was raised by his mother, Maria (1931–2014). He has two brothers, grew up in the Mannheim districts of Lindenhof and Niederfeld, and attended the Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Gymnasium in Neckarau. He played football for MFC 08 Lindenhof and FV Weinheim. At the age of 20, he played for Weinheim in the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg (the third-tier league) alongside Fritz Walter, but he ultimately chose to pursue photography instead.
In the early 1970s, Hamann gained his first experience with photography and Super 8 film. After completing his "Abitur" (secondary school leaving certificate) in 1979, he embarked on a photographic journey through 40 U.S. states. Further stays in the United States followed, and in 1989, he emigrated to the U.S. In 1994, he married actress Marie Préaud, with whom he has two sons, Mateo and Paolo; he lived in both Maine and New York. He has resided in Frankfurt am Main since 2009.
In 2022, he opened "Gallery NY" at the Turley site in Mannheim.
Hamann primarily photographs using a Linhof Technorama—a panoramic camera equipped with a Schneider-Kreuznach lens. He caused an international stir with his concept of positioning this 6x17-format panoramic camera vertically. His book "New York Vertical", created in collaboration with Mannheim-based publisher Bernhard Wipfler between 1991 and 1996, reveals entirely new facets of a city that had already been photographed countless times. This project led to further vertical city portraits. In 1998–99, he became the first living German photographer to be the subject of a six-month solo exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York."
