Title of the work: Cats

Condition: Very good overall. The material is held and cohesive; the line and surface effects are entirely intended by the artist and fully contribute to the work.
Sold unframed.
Provenance:
Artist's studio fonds (acquired directly).
Description:
Drawing from 2008 belonging to the Cat Series. At the bottom, a large cat’s face occupies the sheet, with wide-open eyes, a fixed gaze slightly off-center. The ears are upright, the muzzle is sketched, and white highlights illuminate the forehead, the cheeks and the area around the eyes. The line remains light, almost spectral.
At the top of the sheet, a second cat, smaller, is stretched out, eyes closed, as if asleep or suspended. The two figures do not look at each other. They coexist on the same sheet, one vigilant, the other absent, in a space barely indicated.
The material is restrained: beige paper, fine lines, some hatching and clear whites. Nothing is heavy. The main cat seems almost to emerge from the surface, while the second remains on the margin, more discreet. Detheux, in his later years, often returned to animal or hybrid figures treated with this economy of means.
We are in the artist’s late period: portraits and spectral figures, a light presence, a gaze that probes. The Cat Series allows this proximity without familiarity. The gaze moves between the two animals, one awake, the other asleep, never fully uniting them.
Rare drawing from 2008, signed and dated, with great delicacy of line. A poetic and engaging piece for collectors of Detheux who appreciate animal figures and the light drawings of his late period.
Artist Biography:
Born in Brussels in 1932 and deceased in Tournai in 2010, Robert Detheux is a singular figure of Belgian art of the 20th century. A graduate of the Saint-Luc Institute of Fine Arts in Brussels, he taught graphic expression at the Academy of Tournai until 1996, while pursuing a coherent personal oeuvre.
From the 1950s on, he developed a very personal surrealist and graphic language. He received the Belgian Young Painting Prize in 1953, 1954 and 1971. The 1970s deepened the themes of the body and the female face, hybrid figures and textures.
The following decades extended this territory toward the grotesque, erotism, and black humor, before the spectral portraits and appearances of the 2000s.
Little exhibited during his lifetime, Detheux worked freely. The discovery of his studio fonds (nearly 1,500 works) made this coherence visible.
His drawing, demanding and immediately recognizable, now attracts collectors of Belgian surrealism, in Belgium, Spain and Europe.
