Boulevard sotto la pioggia, an oil on wood panel in the Impressionist style from 1930–1940, by Scuola europea (XX) and sold with its frame; measures 31 × 73 cm and provenance includes a Palermo family collection.
Description from the seller
Oil on panel
Boulevard in the rain
European School
Period: 19th-20th century
Measurements:31x73;17x60
Good condition
Patinated
An fascinating and unusual period painting depicting a perspectival view of a Parisian boulevard animated by pedestrians, flâneurs and a characteristic central carriage (fiacre) drawn by horses.
The extraordinary peculiarity of this work lies in the support used: the artist has deftly painted on a wooden slab rich in natural concentric grain patterns. By masterfully exploiting the knots and the intrinsic grain of the wood fibers, the painter has recreated the atmospheric illusion typical of Parisian overcast skies and the evocative reflective effect of rain-soaked asphalt.
The figures and silhouettes of the passersby, outlined with rapid strokes and a nearly calligraphic graphical style, emerge from the background, creating a strong scenic impact.
It is presented with its important contemporaneous frame which enhances its elongated panoramic format.
Provenance: Palermo family collection
Tracked shipment with courier
N.B
The frame is considered a courtesy; any defects caused by shipping are not grounds for complaint or cancellation of the sale
