Description from the seller
This is an original antique botanical print from 1806, specifically plate number 1806 depicting the plant Salix bicolor (known in English as Shining Dark-green Willow, i.e., Salix bicolor).
Details of the work
• Author and engraver: The work was created by the renowned British naturalist and illustrator James Sowerby, as evidenced by the inscription on the lower margin: “Published by Jas. Sowerby London.”
• Original publication: The plate is part of the monumental scientific work English Botany; or, Coloured Figures of British Plants, a 36-volume collection published in parts between 1790 and 1814, whose scientific texts were curated by Sir James Edward Smith, founder of the Linnean Society.
• Technique: An antique copper engraving, historically refined and hand-coloured with watercolour.
Authenticity and Certification
The back of the frame carries an Italian commercial label functioning as a Certificate of Guarantee, classifying the item as a “19th-century engraving,” confirming the period nature of the print (19th century) and not a modern reproduction. The overall dimensions of the frame are about 16 cm wide by 23 cm high.
