Description from the seller
View of Venice – St. Mark's Square
Oil painting on rigid support, 20th century, signed
An interesting and refined 19th-century Venetian view, executed in oil on a rigid support, depicting a perspective of St. Mark's Square toward the lagoon.
The composition recalls the taste of the great Venetian vedutista tradition, reinterpreting it with a freer and livelier painting. The wide perspective of the square guides the eye toward the sea, while on the sides the monumental Venetian architectures unfold, with the characteristic columns of St. Mark and St. Theodore at the center of the scene.
Particularly interesting is the presence of numerous figures that animate the square: small groups of people, vendors and passersby are represented through synthetic and colorful brushstrokes, creating an effective sense of movement and daily life.
The palette is luminous, with blues, ochres, greens and reds, used to underline the particular atmosphere of the lagoon city. The wide, slightly cloudy sky and the presence of water in the background contribute to a pleasant atmospheric depth.
The work fits into the broader vein of Venetian vedute intended for collectors and the Grand Tour, a genre particularly appreciated during the 19th century. The subject of St. Mark's Square, already celebrated by the great vedutists of the eighteenth century, continued to be reinterpreted by numerous artists and Venetian studios even in the nineteenth century.
In the lower right corner there is a signature, currently not identified with certainty, which is kept here as a documentary element of the work without proposing an arbitrary attribution.
The painting is accompanied by an important carved and gilded wooden frame, richly ornamented with volutes, vegetal motifs and raised decorations. The frame displays notable decorative quality and gives the whole a particularly elegant and scenographic character.
