Murano glass necklace from Italy dating to 1960–1970, featuring 40 colorful Millefiori beads, a screw clasp, a length of about 50 cm and a weight of 35 g, in excellent condition with minimal signs of wear.
Description from the seller
Beautiful, very old Venetian Murano glass bead necklace from an estate.
The necklace has 40 colorful Millefiori glass beads:
• Handarbeit & Asymmetrie: If you look closely at the individual oval beads, you will see small differences in shape and thickness. Also the fused patterns (the so-called murrine with flower- and stripe motifs) sit slightly differently on each bead. This is the classic sign of glass that was hand-wrapped before firing.
• with these beads the surface is smoothly fused all around
• Color depth: The beads are made of color-through glass
ca. 0,5 cm - 1 cm length or diameter
2. The Clasp:
• Screwed clasp (Screw Clasp): The metallic, barrel-shaped rotating clasp is a very typical indicator feature for vintage Murano jewelry. This type of clasp was especially common on necklaces from the 1930s to the 1970s.
• Patina: The metal shows a dark, matte aging (patina) and light wear. This clearly indicates that the necklace is not new, but has some age (often mid-20th century).
3. The spacer beads:
• small red seed beads: The large showy beads are separated by very fine, solid-color glass beads as spacers, which is the traditional Venetian knotting and stringing method. It protects the large Murano beads from rubbing against each other and getting scratched.
In summary, your piece is a beautiful, era-typical original of Venetian glass art, as is often produced by manufacturers like Ercole Moretti in the second half of the 20th century.
