Albert Robida’s Les Cent Nouvelles Nouvelles, a two‑volume illustrated edition in French, published by À la Librairie Illustrée, Paris in 1888, bound in red half‑morocco with gilt motifs, totaling 646 pages in good condition.
Description from the seller
Robida, Albert, The Hundred New Tales, Published by the Illustrated Library, Paris, s.d. (1888), 2 volumes, 1. VII-338 pp., 2. 308 pp., Editions revised from the original texts and Illustrated with more than 300 drawings in-text and out of text by A. Robida.
In-8°, half red morocco bindings, spine with 5 raised bands, gilded floral motifs, gilded title and volume numbers, binding signed "J. Faure" stamped in gold at the tail. Original cover preserved. Bookplate preserved.
Some epidermal marks and handling wear, on the boards and spines. Headcaps and corners worn and rubbed. Joints split.
Interior fresh despite scattered foxing which does not affect the text or the drawings at all.
This collection of facetious medieval tales is a classic of late 19th-century bibliophily, highly sought after for the liveliness and humor of Robida’s drawings, which perfectly match the rabelaisian spirit of the text.
As for J. Faure, he was a Parisian binder-gilder active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His signature "stamped at the tail" guarantees careful, bespoke workmanship of the period, often requested by a particular collector, far superior to the publisher’s industrial calfskin bindings.
Dimensions (cm): 22 x 15 x 2.5
Weight (kg): 1.423
Fast and careful shipping in secure packaging.
