Description from the seller

Sicilian 19th-century cartside panel. Beech wood; carved bas-relief woodcarving of a combat scene, a knight (a French paladin?) in armor and armed with his glaive leaving his encampment (tent in the background on the left). Beautiful original polychromy. Folk art. Italy, early 19th century. Excellent condition for its age – see photos.

Dimensions: Width 21 cm, height 17 cm, depth 4 cm, weight about 400 grams.

[The cart is one of the most characteristic expressions of Sicily’s identity until the mid-18th century; Sicily had only a rudimentary road network, and freight transport was mainly done on the backs of mules. To move about, Sicilians developed light and robust carts with strong wheels. The scenes decorating the carts are drawn from medieval European chivalric literature, naive portrayals of historical or particular events, adventures, battles, and meetings of rulers, but above all battles and the Crusades].

Careful packaging, prompt shipping with tracking and insurance via Colissimo.
