Description
Paris edition of 1794 of the second volume of the Course of Mathematics by Charles Bossut, French mathematician and author of important scientific treatises intended for teaching mathematics and the training of military engineers.
The volume includes an extensive treatise on elementary geometry, the application of algebra to geometry, and a practical treatise on the Toisé, relating to the measurement of fortification works and military buildings.
Particularly interesting is the illustrative apparatus, consisting of 15 folded engraved plates, with numerous figures of plane and solid geometry, conic sections, geometric constructions, and applications to measurement.
The copy preserves the original light-gray binding of the period, with wide margins in the stock, a feature appreciated for a scientific work from the late 18th century.
Collation
Preliminary matter: XVI pages.
Text: 375 numbered pages, followed by a blank page.
Sections checked individually and complete.
15 folded engraved plates:
10 plates of geometry (I–X).
4 plates on the application of algebra to geometry (I–IV).
1 plate related to the Toisé.
Complete copy of Volume II, verified in the sequence of the sections and in the presence of the plates.
Condition/Conservation
Internals generally well preserved, with still solid paper, sharp impressions, and wide original margins in stock.
Occasional browning, stains, halos, and natural signs of time. Some plates show creases and slight marginal irregularities.
Original gray binding with abrasions, creases, tears, and losses, particularly evident on the spine. External preservation is inferior to that of the inner pages.
The copy is sold in the state documented by the photographs, which are an integral part of the description.
Note: this is only Volume II of the work, complete in its parts, not the entire multi-volume course.
