Description from the seller
In the Tränkbachtal, Thuringian Forest
German School – oil on canvas, signed
WORK
A summer day in a forest valley: A stream winds through a bright meadow toward the viewer, on the left tall spruces and brushwood, in the middle a group of young birches, on the right two birches in front of a dark spruce forest, at its edge a path runs along. Behind it wooded slopes and a ridgeline in the haze. Impasto, confident brushwork, fresh greens. Horizontal format, 60.3 x 81.2 cm.
On the back in pencil on the canvas is written “im Tränkbachtal (Thür.)”. The Tränkbachtal is located in the Thuringian Forest near Frauenwald and leads down to the Schönbrunn reservoir.

ORIGIN
From the Doris Fliegner collection. Doris Fliegner was a teacher in Salzgitter and Helmstedt and collected art all her life, with a focus on the Braunschweig region. Unlike Worpswede or Dachau, Braunschweig never had an artist colony; the art life was carried by the Art Association (founded 1832), the School of Arts and Crafts from which today’s Hochschule für Bildende Künste emerged, artist clubs such as the “Moist Brush” (1881), and civilian collectors – collectors like Doris Fliegner. Her collection includes groups of works by the Braunschweig painters Karl Neuß and Hedwig Hornburg and works by the Salzgitter painter Gustav Hagemann. When and where she acquired this painting is not recorded.
CONDITION
Good condition. The paint layer is closed, not cleaned, not restored. Please regard the photos as part of the description.
FRAME AND HANGING
Silver-colored profile frame; the edges of the silver frame are worn and the red base shows through; scratches on the right molding. The frame is included with the lot. Please check mounting before hanging.
SHIPPING
Framed shipping, corners and surface protected, as freight. Pick-up in Helmstedt possible.
Frame: Silver-colored profile frame, the edge is worn (red base visible), scratches on the right molding.
