Description from the seller
French neo-expressionist school – Oriental Lady – Oil on canvas
An attractive oil painting on canvas from a contemporary French school, executed in a neo-expressionist aesthetic with marked influences of Fauvism and decorative figure drawing inspired by oriental motifs.
The work represents an enigmatic female figure with stylized features, wrapped in a deep cobalt blue attire, ornamented with circular reddish motifs. Her face, in yellow and orange tones, features almond-shaped eyes and an introspective expression, while one of her hands, rendered in a luminous white, rests delicately beside the face.
The composition stands out for its extraordinary chromatic intensity, built from contrasts between electric blues, deep reds, golden yellows, and blacks. The energetic brushwork, pronounced outlines, and deliberate anatomical simplification give the figure a powerful visual presence.
Style and artistic influences
From a stylistic point of view, the painting is part of the neo-expressionist current, characterized by the revival of figuration, gestural freedom, and the use of color as a vehicle for emotional expression.
The work also shows clear affinities with French Fauvism, especially with the pictorial universe of Henri Matisse, both for its anti-naturalistic treatment of color and for the importance given to ornamental elements and to representations of women inspired by Oriental themes.
There are also certain connections with Kees van Dongen’s aesthetic, particularly in the stylization of facial features, the expressiveness of the gaze, and the use of intense chromatic contrasts.
The influence of Japonisme and decorative Orientalism is evident in the gathered hairstyle, clothing, and the figure’s arrangement, reinterpreted through a contemporary, free, and personal plastic language.
The result is a composition of great decorative strength that blends the tradition of French avant-gardes with a current neo-expressionist sensibility.
