A single Indonesian teak wood carving titled Woodcarving Bali Singa Ambara Raja, an original Balinese winged lion sculpture (Jatayu) from the 20th century, measuring 30 cm high, 20 cm wide and 20 cm deep, weighing 1,219 g, from a gallery/antique dealer provenance, in good condition and sold without a stand.
Description from the seller
Woodcarving ornament representing Wooden Winged Lion (Singa) from Bali Indonesia, this is not a remake but an original one!
In bali, a statue of a winged lion is often placed at the joining of the beams of a building's roof structure. The sculpture acts as a symbolic protector to fend off spirits that might disturb the occupants. This beautifull carved wooden and polychrome image of a Balinese winged lion would have been used in tempel or puri. Most probably placed high up above an entranceway or in the eaves when not in use. It has a great apperance with bulging eyes, snarling mouth and detailed tail. It’s wings are carved with feathers.
The condition is great and complete. There are no significant losses to the carved detailing. There is an old shrinkage-related crack on the chest of the lion. Pls look closely to the patina of the old paint on the jati (teak wood) Item dimensions: 47x35x14cm. High in weight incl wooden stand almost 8.5KG! A true special find from Boengkoelan in the north of Bali. Some minor parts have missing paint chips and 1 crack in chest (as always) are present. It is only lightly cleaned and waxed as i did not want to clean it to preserve authenticity and originality. All together its in good condition with an amazing patina, not seen often this kind of quality and style must have been of high kaste owner.
