Description from the seller
Commemorative Relief Plaque of the Sho-Hondo at Taisekiji with Mount Fuji, Gold-Tone, 16 cm
– A relief plaque depicting the Sho-Hondo, the great hall of Taisekiji at the foot of Mount Fuji
– Mount Fuji rises behind the hall, framed by branches of cherry blossom
– Gold-tone plated finish, with a back embossed all over in a leaf pattern
Summary: A rectangular commemorative relief plaque measuring approximately 16 cm wide and 8 cm high. It shows the Sho-Hondo of Taisekiji, the head temple of Nichiren Shoshu in Shizuoka Prefecture, with Mount Fuji beyond and cherry blossom in the corners. The surface has a gold-coloured plating over an unidentified base metal. It can serve as a paperweight or as a small display piece. There are scuffs, marks and areas of plating loss.
Taisekiji lies on the lower slopes of Mount Fuji near Fujinomiya. Its Sho-Hondo, designed by the architect Kimio Yokoyama and completed in October 1972, was one of the most ambitious religious buildings of post-war Japan, with a dramatic sweeping roof and a vast colonnaded front. The hall was dismantled in 1998, so images such as this now preserve the memory of a building that no longer stands.
The relief captures the scene in crisp detail. On the left, the great curved roof of the hall rises like a wing above the long colonnade, while a fountain and broad terraces open out in front. Behind, the snow-streaked cone of Mount Fuji fills the sky, and stylised trees run along the foreground.
Branches of cherry blossom reach in from the upper corners and the lower left, each flower carefully modelled, giving the composition a seasonal, celebratory feel. The scene is set within a stepped, moulded frame.
The back is finished with a dense, embossed pattern of overlapping leaves within a raised border, so the piece looks attractive from both sides. It can rest flat on a desk as a paperweight or be propped upright on a shelf.
There are scuffs and surface marks overall. Dark stains run along part of the inner frame on the left side, and the plating has worn away along an edge at the front and at a corner and edge on the back, with a few small dark spots. Please view the images closely for the overall condition.
A small, evocative memento of a landmark of modern Japanese religious architecture beneath Mount Fuji.
