The Manuel des Huissiers, ou Nouvelles Instructions by M. Ouin, published in Paris in 1775 by Antoine Boudet, is a leather-bound special edition in French with 316 pages and includes 18 loose contemporary leaves and period manuscript provenance.
Description from the seller
Original exemplar of the Manuel des Huissiers, ou Nouvelles Instructions (Manual de los Alguaciles, o Nuevas Instrucciones), published in Paris in 1775 by Antoine Boudet, Printer to the King. Written by M. Ouin, former mounted bailiff of the Châtelet of Paris. Work published with Approval and Privilege of the King under the reign of Louis XVI. Includes the author's original handwritten signature at the bottom of the title page.
Physical characteristics and pagination:
• Pagination: The work contains 316 pages of main text (including the index or Table des Chapitres).
• Supplements: The lot also includes 18 loose pages/leaflets of the period (practical notes and model bailiff's acts).
• Bindings: Full leather of the period, spine with 5 raised bands richly decorated with gilded floral motifs. Preserves the brown leather headband ("MANUEL DES...").
• Condition: Interior wear is very clean, rag paper well preserved and flexible. The binding shows typical wear due to age and daily professional use: notable loss of leather on the headcap (upper spine) exposing the headband, and some rubbing on the boards.
Exceptional note of historical provenance (1782-1783):
The greatest appeal of this copy lies in its period handwritten annotations on the back cover and on the flyleaf:
1. A rhymed ownership note dated 1782 and signed by George Louis Cheron de la Mairy, resident in Paris, on rue des Boucheries Saint-Honoré (old street that disappeared during 19th-century reforms).
2. The inscription of its official appointment just the following year: "Reçu Huissier à cheval - en 1783 - le 2 avril" (Received as bailiff on horseback on 2 April 1783). The book belonged to and served exactly the professional for whom it was designed.
3. A later gift mention dating from the mid-20th century: "A. Savignasse, Navidad 1950 - Regalado por la Sra. Viuda Dumont Céleste de Suippes (Marne)".
A magnificent testament to the history of Parisian law and the life of a ministerial officer at the end of the Ancien Régime, ideal for collectors or jurists.
