Description from the seller
Riverside banks, by Henri-François Perret
Pair of oil paintings on panel. Superb frames from gilt-styles with palmette decorations.
A very fine group of landscapes in a realist or late impressionist style. They depict river banks, with green banks, small boats, stone bridges and a village in the background. The riverbanks, boats and stone bridges fit perfectly with Henri-François Perret’s favored themes.
Henri-François Perret originates from the Creuse. He was born in 1825 in Guéret.
The visible texture on the surface and the detail in the close-ups show an oil painting technique on wood.
Henri-François Perret is a 19th-century painter. He was notably active in Île-de-France, Normandy and Limousin and exhibited at the Paris Salon between 1840 and 1870.
Henri-François Perret (often listed under the name Henri Perret) was born in 1825, in Guéret, in the Creuse. A pupil of the renowned landscape painter Charles-François Daubigny (one of the pioneers of the Barbizon School), he drew inspiration from his native region (Limousin) as well as the riverbanks of Île-de-France and Normandy to compose a large portion of his paintings. He is primarily known for his landscapes.
His canvases and panels frequently depict bucolic scenes, rivers, roads or herds (such as cattle watering), aligning with the tradition of French 19th-century landscape painters devoted to natural realism. His works circulated not only in France but also on the American market.
Frames with molded and carved mouldings. The inner border features a classical carved frieze of palmette or oval motifs. The outer border is ornamented with a twisted garland motif of laurel leaves or ribbon, typical of the Neoclassical classical style. The frame includes a recessed groove between the richly decorated outer edge and the inner moulding, adding depth to the painting.
Framed size: 45 cm x 30 cm.
Unframed size: 32 cm x 17 cm.
