Description from the seller
TIGNY AND GUÉRIN — NATURAL HISTORY OF INSECTS (VOLUME IX).
Paris: Librairie Encyclopédique de Roret, 1830.
12mo. Contemporary pink-paper binding, untrimmed.
Precious and charming ninth volume of the grand study of popular and scientific entomology initiated by Tigny and updated by Félix Édouard Guérin-Méneville (one of the greatest French entomologists of the 19th century) in 1830.
Thirteen-and-three-quarters (33) engraved plates (num numbered 5 to 38) off-text and ultimately hand-colored.
The work comprises a gallery of rigorous morphological descriptions and is notable for the precision of its engraved plates, hand-painted illumination, depicting specimens of prestigious Lepidoptera and anatomical structures of insects.
Volume in its original pink binding in its natural state. Spine worn with loss of paper, covers rubbed. Interior remarkably well preserved, the engraved plates retaining hand-applied colors with exceptional freshness and brilliance.
To find a copy of this 1830 edition with entomological plates so finely colored in period watercolor (such as the famous Death’s-head Hawkmoth or the Priam butterfly) makes it a magnificent display piece for lovers of old naturalist illustration.
