Marine. Barques sur la grève, oil on panel, a French painting from the 19th century, 38 x 19 cm (49.5 x 30 cm with frame).
Description from the seller
Boats on the Shore
Oil on panel, French school of the 19th century, or early 20th century.
This seascape is a very classic subject for painters of the Normandy or Breton coast (Honfleur, Trouville, Concarneau, etc...), even if the type of vessel can also be associated with the Channel or the North Sea.
A cleaning will restore the painting to all its depth. The boats are marked with red, the sails are rigged.
This is an oil painting on wooden panel. The brushwork is vigorous, in impasto (visible in the sky/clouds), typical of the end of the 19th century or the beginning of the 20th century. The register is post-impressionist or from a North/West French marine painting school.
On the back of the panel is a stamp, an ink-stamped oval provisioner's seal. It is the mark of a color and art supplies merchant (often Parisian, such as Blanchet, Deforge-Carpentier, Lequette, Lefranc, etc., or a local merchant). This type of stamp stamped on the back of the panel was used to certify the materials and is a very good dating indicator, confirming a French manufacture between 1870 and 1920.
The painting measures 49.5 cm x 30 cm. The painting itself 38 x 19 cm.
Minor frame flaws, nicely decorated.
