Description from the seller

Library desk or central table – Napoleon III period, 19th century

Elegant library desk or central table from the Napoleon III era, crafted in precious wood and characterized by a refined oval-shaped top with a brick-red leather inlay enriched by a gilded decorative border. The superb wood grain and the quality of the veneering enhance the refinement of the craftsmanship and the balance of the forms.

The under-top apron is enriched by a central drawer finely carved with relief motifs depicting festoons, leaves and crossed torches, typical of the elegant French ornamental repertoire of the Second Empire. The piece rests on four turned and fluted legs, joined by a dramatic crisscrossed arched stretcher with a centrally turned element, which provides structural solidity and great compositional harmony.

A piece of notable presence and prestige, designed to be placed even in the center of a room, where it can be appreciated from every angle thanks to the richness of the carvings and the quality of the finishes. An excellent example of French cabinetmaking of the 19th century, ideal as a representative desk, library table, or an important furnishing element for classical interiors and antique collections. It preserves a pleasant patina of age and signs of use consistent with the age and history of the piece.
