Description from the seller

This extensive painting (100 x 81 cm) concerns a masterpiece by the Swedish artist August Hagborg (1852-1921). A smaller peasant scene (Intérieur dalécarlien) by this painter is part of the collection of the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.

In a atmospheric Swedish landscape, the viewer of the painting witnesses an intimate moment full of restrained tension between a young woman and a peasant boy.

The woman steals the show in her beautifully detailed, traditional Dalarna costume, which vividly contrasts with the rustic woodwork. While she is gracefully leaning against the farm veranda, the boy looks up at her with a curious, stolen glance. In the background, the soft, diffuse evening light is reflected on the water beside historic wooden barns.

The result is a masterful tribute by Hagborg to Scandinavian national romance, in which nostalgia and pure emotion come together.

BIOGRAPHY

August Hagborg (May 26, 1852, Gothenburg – April 30, 1921, Paris) was a Swedish painter best known for his peasant scenes and realistic paintings of the Normandy and Breton coasts. Hagborg was a regular participant in the Paris Salons from 1876 to 1911.

His work is represented in various European museums, including Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rouen, Musée d'Orsay and Musée du Luxembourg in Paris.

At the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, he befriended other painters, including Carl Larsson, Georg Pauli, Ernst Josephson, and Anders Zorn, who all became lifelong friends.

Both Hagborg's talent recognition and the acknowledgment of the quality of his integration in his adopted homeland France were evident from the various prizes and honorary titles he received from the state and artistic institutions.

1879: Medal for the painting "Tide in the English Channel"
1889: Member of the painters’ jury for the World’s Fair, appointed by the administration of Fine Arts
1890-1911: Member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts
1893: Knight of the Legion of Honor (1893)
1894: Member of the painters’ jury of the Salon of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts
1900: Member of the painters’ jury of the World’s Fair
1901: Promoted to Officer of the Legion of Honor
1921: Commemorative exhibition in Sweden

The painting is in very good condition.
