Caran d'Ache, the pen name of Emmanuel Poiré, born November 6, 1858 in Moscow and died February 25, 1909 in Paris, is a famous French humorous illustrator and caricaturist. His works are represented in the greatest museums including the Louvre.

This drawing comes from the posthumous studio sale held at Hôtel Drouot on June 10 and 11, 1909. See the Gallica scans of the sale catalog in the appendix.
