Description from the seller
Vermeil sugar tongs – Jean-Baptiste Harleux – Paris, 1834–1838 – about 190 years
Elegant antique sugar tongs, dating to 188–192 years ago, made in Paris under the July Monarchy and attributed to the goldsmith Jean-Baptiste Harleux.
This piece is particularly interesting for its very tightly defined dating: between 1834 and 1838, i.e., manufacture dating back today to about 188–192 years.
It bears the Vieillard mark, 1st title, used in Paris between 1819 and 1838 for silver of 950‰ fineness, as well as the master mark of Jean-Baptiste Harleux, whose mark was struck in 1834.
This combination thus allows precisely locating the creation of this tongs in a four-year period, between 1834 and 1838, corresponding to the early years of the silversmith’s activity under the Vieillard hallmark guarantee system.
