VERNE, JULES. — FIRST EDITION IN BINDING « AUX INITIALES ».
Les Indes-noires. Paris : J. Hetzel et Cie, 1877.
Large octavo. Publisher's Havana cloth, plate « aux Initiales / JV-JH » in gold and black, grey endpapers, gilded edges.
First edition of this masterpiece by Jules Verne, published in 1877. Catalogue at the end of the work.
This fantastical and mining novel takes the reader to the depths of the Aberfoyle coal mine in Scotland, where a community lives underground in seclusion, confronted with unexplained phenomena, mysterious vapors and the ingenuity of the engineers.
Very good condition. Havana cloth of magnificent luster. The gilding on the front board plaque (JV and JH medallions, Greek-key encasements) and the spine are bright. Small stains on the rear board. Grey endpapers intact. Interior clean on period paper with a few pale, evenly scattered foxmarks, very common.
A superb copy.
