Description from the seller

Antique French Linen Bed Sheet – 2.40 m wide, with Embroidered R.C. Initials

An impressive piece of antique French bed linen, distinguished by its generous 2.40 m width, beautiful openwork embroidery and interesting R.C. initials. This is an exceptionally wide sheet, ideal for dressing a bed of up to 2 metres wide while allowing for a generous overhang.

The sheet comes from the 17th-century château near my home in France, where I have been fortunate to acquire and select some magnificent pieces of ancestral bed and table linen over the past two years.

The château's now elderly owners are custodians of four generations of family linen. Despite the many bedrooms, the château's linen room contains ten traditional armoires, all filled with beautiful antique pieces — far more linen than could ever have been used to dress every bedroom.

Sadly, the château itself has fallen into a state of considerable disrepair and urgently requires major renovation. With financial resources almost exhausted, the owners are gradually selling some of their precious family linen to fund the most pressing repairs and help preserve this otherwise beautiful 17th-century residence for the future. Each piece therefore carries not only its own history, but also a small part of the story of the château it once called home.

The R.C. initials are particularly attractive, worked with a combination of partial embroidery and delicate outlining. This technique gives the lettering an almost three-dimensional appearance, allowing the monogram to stand out beautifully against the white linen.

The decorative design is equally appealing. On each side, three squares of open-thread work create a refined geometric arrangement, continued across both returns. Three horizontal bands of openwork add further detail, with four star-like lace motifs placed centrally. Between these bands, solid medallions framed by tiny dots provide an elegant contrast to the lighter, more intricate needlework.

The result is a beautifully balanced composition, combining the substance of fine antique linen with the delicacy of traditional French embroidery.

At an impressive 2.40 metres wide, this is a particularly desirable sheet for a generously proportioned bed, offering both practical dimensions and the timeless elegance of French ancestral linen.
