Bei Tölz – Winterlicher Gebirgsbach, a 1936 oil on wood panel landscape by Fritz Osswald (1878–1966) from Switzerland, in the 1930s period and sold with a frame.
Description from the seller
Bei Tölz – Winterlicher Gebirgsbach, 1936
Fritz Osswald (1878–1966) – Öl auf Holzplatte, signiert, verso bezeichnet und datiert
WORK
A mountain stream winds through snow-covered land toward the viewer. Its water glows green and turquoise between large snow-covered stones and banks; red-brown scrub glows at the shore, spruce groups stand in the snow, and behind it lies a chain of snow-covered mountains in sunlight. Osswald painted the snow with thick, relief-like brushwork, the shadows violet and blue – that is precisely what he became famous for. Landscape format, 70.5 × 77.4 cm.
THE PLACE
On the back the painter inscribed the painting himself: “Fritz Osswald 1936 – Bei Tölz”. Bad Tölz lies on the Isar at the edge of the Bavarian pre-alps; Osswald lived since 1922 in Starnberg and repeatedly painted the Upper Bavarian winter landscape en plein air.
ARTIST
Fritz Osswald was born in 1878 in Hottingen near Zurich as the son of the sculptor Albert Osswald and died in 1966 in Starnberg. He studied from 1897 at the Munich Academy with Wilhelm von Diez and Nikolaos Gyzis, began exhibiting with the Munich Secession from 1904, and in 1913, by invitation of Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig, became a member of the Darmstadt Artists’ Colony. His large winter landscapes made him known as the “Winter Painter”; contemporary critics reported that he also painted outdoors in freezing cold. Works are located, among others, in the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt and the Museum Starnberger See.
