Yamaha XT500 1U6 from 1977 with matching frame and engine numbers 1U6-000277, 9,897 miles, German registration papers, and located in Germany in very good condition.
Description from the seller
Yamaha XT500 1U6 – 1977 – Matching Numbers – No. 277
For sale is an exceptionally early Yamaha XT500, type 1U6, from 1977.
A special feature of this motorcycle is the very low frame and engine number 1U6-000277. The frame and engine carry the identical number, making it a true matching-numbers vehicle.
The 1U6 model was offered in 1977 for the European market. The available VIN register lists the 1977 1U6 series starting with 1U6-000101. Thus, the number 277 represents a very early specimen of this series.

Condition and originality
The XT is in an exceptionally original and unmodified condition.
Especially with an early XT500, it is not self-evident today to find a motorcycle that has not been extensively altered, restored, or equipped with numerous accessories over the decades.
For this specimen, the preservation of the existing original substance is therefore intentionally placed in the foreground.
The 1977 model year shows several characteristic features and technical changes compared to other years, including changes to the tank design, exhaust system and other components.
Engine and technical condition
The XT500 starts and runs perfectly.
However, during operation, mechanical noises are perceptible, which, in our assessment, originate from the piston/cylinder area.
The exact cause of these noises has not been diagnosed.
Due to the exceptionally original and pristine condition of the motorcycle, there was deliberately no attempt to open or dismantle the engine merely for diagnostic purposes.
Therefore, we have not opened the engine and have not investigated the cause of the noise further.
The motorcycle is offered with this known technical note. A future owner can decide for themselves whether and to what extent a technical inspection or restoration should be carried out.
Documentation and accessories
The motorcycle includes:
- German vehicle registration book
- Manual
- Service book
- Spare transponder key
The combination of these documents, the early chassis number, and the engine-number match make the vehicle particularly interesting.
Special features
From our point of view, the decisive feature of this XT500 is not a complete restoration, but rather its authentic, largely untouched original condition.
The frame and engine carry the matching number:
1U6-000277
Thus, the motorcycle has matching numbers and a remarkably low number within the 1977 1U6 series. The documented VIN register lists the European 1977 XT500 1U6 starting from 1U6-000101.
Even on Catawiki, 1977 XT500s of type 1U6 with matching engine and frame numbers have already been offered as a corresponding feature.

Catawiki always aims to offer you the best possible buying experience. Our experts virtually review and select every vehicle in line with our submission guidelines and we require our sellers to provide the most accurate description of the vehicle. However, providing a fully detailed analysis of the vehicle is extremely difficult, and close to impossible. To guide you, we ask our sellers to provide information about the vehicle’s condition. Please consider that most vehicles for sale are classic vehicles and they often already have a whole life behind them, meaning that even a condition 1 or 2 vehicle might need maintenance to be ready for the road. It is advised to carefully read our submission guidelines that further describe details about the condition grades and types to manage your expectations. Cars are sold “as is”, meaning as described and in the condition they are in at the time of the sale and without any representation, warranty or assumption of liability of any kind as to the condition by Catawiki or by the seller. The condition of this item is the opinion of the seller and may differ from yours, your local garage, or the dealer’s opinion. This does not automatically mean the car does not conform to its description. Before bidding, please check your local legislation regarding vehicle registration. Neither the seller nor Catawiki is responsible for the registration of the vehicle in your country and will not accept a cancellation for your failure to register the vehicle. We also recommend that, if possible, you arrange a viewing with the seller before placing a bid.
