Description from the seller
Art print Grand Hôtel de Knocke – Mappamundi – 1980s – 75 × 55 cm
Magnificent decorative art print of the former Grand Hôtel de Knocke, once located on the dike of Knokke-Heist. The print bears a blind embossing stamp and was produced from an original design by Daveluy from the late 19th century. The print is original and produced by offset lithography in the 1980s.
The scene vividly and skillfully depicts the grandeur of the historic hotel and the fashionable atmosphere of the coastal life around the turn of the century. The print is rich in fine details, including elegant figures, beach scenes, and the distinctive architecture of the hotel. The rural character of the surroundings behind the building stands out as well, providing a particularly atmospheric glimpse of Knokke at that time.
The Grand Hôtel was founded in 1890 by the Brussels businessman Louis Van Bunnen, a friend of landscape painter Alfred Verwee. The majestic hotel rose amidst the dunes at the end of the former Zeeweg, now Lippenslaan. King Leopold II also stayed there for a few days in 1891. After expansions in 1905 and 1926, the building eventually reached seven stories.
This art print was issued in the 1980s by Mappamundi and at the time sold by an art gallery in Knokke. It is a limited edition of only 50 copies, produced by offset lithography. It is printed on exceptionally heavy and sturdy paper, estimated at about 400 g/m², and executed in the style of the original travel and tourism posters from the Belle Époque.
Once framed, this is a stunning focal piece for collectors of Knokke, Belgian coastal history, Belle Époque art, and vintage tourism posters.
